“They say gallantry's gone. They never met my husband.”

Who Is YassyQ?

YassyQ is the matriarch-philosopher who already knows the answers and is just delighted to watch everyone else figure it out.

She named her lawnmower Louise. Her truck Betsie drinks oil like beer. Her husband’s thirty years of construction dust have become a love map. She is not stumbling — she is planted. The one the stumble-ers eventually find when they’re tired of running.

A local bike shop owner taught her three chords between fixing chains and said: That’s all you need — the rest is having something worth saying. He also taught her machines have personalities. Thirty years to fully understand both lessons.

Emmylou Harris showed that a broken voice carries more truth than a polished one — that the crack in the note is where meaning gets in. Lhasa de Sela proved you can sing in any language when the heart is real enough, that the voice itself becomes the translation. Lucinda Williams demonstrated that messy and honest will outlast perfect and careful every time. YassyQ works from all three of those convictions — but where they documented the wound, she has already made peace with the scar. She didn’t arrive at wisdom by having an easy life. She arrived by naming her lawnmower and paying attention to what stayed.

The Wayist Thread

Udbhu-kanti — the Wayist principle of right relationship with material things — is not a concept in YassyQ’s world. It’s her coffee cup with the chipped edge, the one she reaches for first. It’s the lawnmower she repairs rather than replaces, because she’s named her and now they’re in relationship. It’s seeing gallantry in damaged sinuses and penny-pinching love. Seeing consciousness in everything, even the things with blades and engines.

That is the Wayist life: not an ideology worn on a bumper sticker, but a way of being with what you actually have.

A Lyric That Lives It

“His skin shows every summer he worked in the sun / Hands move slower now from all he’s done / But those hands tenderly held me through every storm.”

You suspect the real riches aren’t in the shiny things, but in the names you’ve given the things that stay — and you are ready to stop performing and start being.
