There’s a girl at the bar with hair like summer grass
Green as a pasture, attitude and sass
Complaining ‘bout men and people with small minds
So Bob and I just listen, nod along and bide our time
We shake our heads when she shakes hers, playing it cool
Both wondering what her daddy did to make her look like a bull
With that ring through her nose like his livestock wear
Must be tough being her dad, we figure, sitting there
So Bob leans in, asks real polite
Just making conversation on a Friday night
“Who’s your daddy, girl? Who’s your daddy?”
Just an old man question, didn’t mean no harm
“Who’s your daddy? Where’s your family?”
Next thing I know, they setting off alarms
She went off like a bottle rocket on the Fourth of July
I’m just trying to understand why families say goodbye
“Who’s your daddy?” seemed like a normal thing to say
Now I’m cancelled from the bar…
and she walked away
Even more alone
Well, that question unleashed all that is unholy in that place
She’s yelling about boundaries and personal space
Bob’s eyes got wide, I’m scratching my head
“I just meant your father, girl, your family,” I said
But she’d cancelled them, oh lord, cut ’em all away
Cause they told her to respect democracy
Imagine that, I say…
So I thunk, “Well now I REALLY want to know
Who raised you up? Where’d your people go?”
“Who’s your daddy, girl? Who’s your daddy?”
Just an old man question, didn’t mean no harm
“Who’s your daddy? Where’s your family?”
Next thing I know, she set off the alarm
Went off like a bottle rocket on Fourth of July
I’m just trying understand …why families say goodbye
Now I’m cancelled from the bar… and she walked away
Even more alone
See, family’s where we learn to get along
With people who think for themself
We learn tolerance at the table …we learn to love
We choose connection, over being right
Cancel Culture’s got folks standing all alone
Nobody to call when times get hard and cold
But she cancelled hers… imagine that…
So now I’m banned from O’Malley’s, asking ‘bout her daddy,
Chuck the cancelled man, trying to understand
Bob says “Let it go, Chuck, it’s a different age”
But I’m worried ‘bout that girl, alone and full of rage
“Who’s your daddy, girl? Who’s your daddy?”
I just wanted to know, whose gonna catch when you fall
“Who’s your daddy? Where’s your family?”
‘Cause cutting them out girl, …that just feels wrong
Oh Lord families ain’t perfect, mine’s been through hell
But when the storms come rolling, they wish you well
“who will catch you when the world comes crashing — it will”
Now you’re standing all so very, alone…
Green hair’s nice and all
But when you’re sixty with a walker
And life’s knocked you around some
You’re gonna wish for daddy’s number
Alone is not the Wayist way.
Just saying…
(Who’s your daddy, girl…)
Just saying…
(Who’s your dad …)
